Build a Sustainable Community | Settlement Planning Project |Geography Activity
No Prep Plans: What Would You Do?
You Discover a New Island Settlement Proposal
Grades 4–8
Think. Discuss. Decide. Defend.
What if you were given the chance to build a brand-new community from the ground up?
In this engaging, real-world decision-making lesson, students take on the role of settlement planners after discovering an uninhabited island in the Pacific Ocean. Their challenge is to design a thriving, sustainable community for 500 people while balancing human needs, environmental protection, fairness, and long-term success.
There is no single correct answer. Students must analyze competing priorities, consider multiple perspectives, evaluate trade-offs, and defend their decisions with logical reasoning and evidence—just like real planners, government leaders, and community developers.
Perfect for building critical thinking, geography, civics, sustainability, and leadership skills through meaningful discussion and authentic problem-solving.
