Writing Literary Analysis Essays: Explaining Evidence | Grades 6–8
Help students move beyond dropping a quotation into a paragraph and start doing the real work of literary analysis—explaining how and why their evidence proves their point.
This no-prep lesson teaches students to recognize shallow explanation, ask deeper “So what?” questions, and turn textual evidence into meaningful analysis. Students can apply the activities to any novel, short story, or literary text they are currently studying.

- Explain how and why evidence supports a claim
