A Long Walk to Water Novel Study Bundle |10 Lessons + Literary Analysis Projects

A Long Walk to Water Novel Study Bundle | 10 Lessons + Literary Analysis Projects | Grades 6–8

Take students beyond basic comprehension with this complete 10-lesson A Long Walk to Water Novel Study Bundle designed for Grades 6–8. The Two Stories, One Novel series guides students through Salva’s and Nya’s parallel narratives while building increasingly sophisticated skills in comparison, character analysis, cause and effect, textual evidence, theme, narrative structure, synthesis, and literary analysis.

Each lesson includes a focused investigation plus an engaging group literary analysis project, giving students opportunities to research, discuss, analyze, plan, create, and defend their thinking. The sequence builds toward a culminating Dual-Narrative Final Exhibition, where students use evidence from across the novel to examine why Linda Sue Park chose to tell these two stories together.

Designed as No Prep Plans, the lessons can be used throughout a whole-class novel study, with literature circles, for independent extension, or as deeper analysis activities alongside your existing reading schedule.

10 Lessons Included
1. Two Opening Worlds — Opening Worlds Comparison
Students compare Salva’s and Nya’s opening circumstances, examining how setting, time period, daily life, and challenges establish two very different worlds.
2. Walking for Safety vs. Walking for Water
Students investigate the very different reasons Salva and Nya must walk and analyze what their journeys reveal about necessity, danger, responsibility, and survival.
3. Two Childhoods — Two Childhoods Comparison
Students compare Salva’s and Nya’s experiences as young people, considering how circumstances shape their responsibilities, choices, opportunities, and childhood experiences.
4. Two Daily Struggles — Challenge & Response Comparison
Students identify recurring challenges faced by both characters and analyze how each responds, moving beyond identifying problems to examining character reactions and choices.
5. Two Kinds of Survival — Survival Evidence Board
Students investigate how survival means something different within each storyline and gather evidence demonstrating the different forms survival takes for Salva and Nya.
6. Two Communities in Need — Community Challenges Investigation
Students move beyond the individual characters to examine the larger challenges facing their communities, combining textual evidence with relevant historical context.
7. How Salva’s Past Shapes His Future — Cause & Effect Story Chain
Students trace connected events across Salva’s storyline to determine how earlier experiences, challenges, and choices directly shape later outcomes.
8. When the Timelines Move Closer — Connection Clue Investigation
Students become clue detectives, identifying textual details involving time, geography, and plot that suggest Salva’s and Nya’s seemingly separate stories are gradually moving toward one another.
9. When Salva & Nya’s Stories Meet — Connection Reveal Evidence Web
Once the connection is revealed, students map exactly how and why the two narratives intersect, support the connection with evidence, and reconsider earlier events in light of what they now know.
10. Why Tell These Stories Together? — Dual-Narrative Final Exhibition
Students synthesize their learning from across the entire novel to construct and defend an argument explaining why Salva’s and Nya’s stories are more meaningful when experienced as one interwoven narrative.
