No Prep Plans: What Would You Do?
Your City is Growing Too Fast--Urban Planning Proposal
Grades 4–8
Think. Discuss. Decide. Defend.
What happens when a city grows faster than it can handle?
In this engaging, real-world decision-making lesson, students become lead urban planners responsible for preparing a growing city for the future. As the population rapidly expands, students must balance housing, transportation, schools, parks, businesses, and environmental sustainability while protecting the character of the community.
Should the city build upward with apartments or expand outward into farmland? Should new roads be built or should public transportation become the priority? How much green space should be protected? Students discover that every planning decision creates new opportunities—and new trade-offs.
There is no single correct answer. Students must weigh competing priorities, evaluate multiple perspectives, and defend their final urban planning proposal using evidence and thoughtful reasoning.
