Five Themes of Geography: Region — Perceptual RegionsPerceptual Region Survey Project | Grades 6–8

Help students explore the most human and perception-based type of region with this no-prep geography investigation! Students learn how perceptual regions are shaped by shared feelings, cultural identity, personal experience, and common perceptions rather than official boundaries.

Students then conduct a Perceptual Region Survey Project, asking real people where they believe a region’s boundaries lie and comparing how different perspectives create different geographic understandings.

Students Will:
- Define and identify perceptual regions
- Explore examples such as the South, the Midwest, and downtown
- Survey at least three people about a region’s perceived boundaries
- Compare where respondents agree and disagree
- Investigate why people perceive the same region differently
- Analyze influences such as culture, experience, location, and familiarity
- Explain how personal perception shapes geography
