The Giver: Sameness — What Was Sacrificed? Benefits vs. Costs Analysis Board |
The Giver: Sameness — What Was Sacrificed? Benefits vs. Costs Analysis Board | Community, Control & Dystopian Society | Grades 6–10
What would you be willing to give up for a society that promises safety, comfort, and order?
This no-prep literature analysis lesson challenges students to investigate one of the central ideas in Lois Lowry’s The Giver: Sameness. Students examine what the community has eliminated in its attempt to remove differences, conflict, and unpredictability—and consider whether the security gained is worth the freedom, choice, emotion, and individuality sacrificed.
Brief Overview
Students begin by organizing their understanding of how Sameness affects choice, emotion, individuality, safety, and predictability. They then move beyond identifying what was lost to examine cause and effect, hidden costs, and the tradeoffs created by the community’s decisions.
Students weigh competing values such as safety, freedom, choice, individuality, equality, and predictability before forming their own position on whether Sameness is worth its costs.
