No Prep Plans: Creativity & Innovation Skills – How to Think Critically

No Prep Plans: Creativity & Innovation Skills – How to Think Critically

Help students become smarter thinkers by teaching them how to question claims, evaluate evidence, recognize common thinking traps, and make better decisions. In this engaging, hands-on lesson, students investigate how critical thinking works in everyday life by exploring cognitive biases, examining real-world examples, and practicing evidence-based reasoning.

Students begin by identifying common thinking traps such as confirmation bias, anchoring, and motivated reasoning before learning practical strategies to overcome them. They then investigate a real-world claim, weigh supporting and opposing evidence, ask better questions, and justify their conclusions like true detectives. Finally, students reflect on their own thinking, identify personal biases, and develop strategies for becoming more thoughtful, open-minded decision-makers.

Designed for Grades 6–8, this no-prep lesson develops critical thinking, media literacy, reasoning, communication, and reflective thinking through authentic real-world investigations.
