No Prep Plans Mongol Empire|Daily Life & Culture-- Homes, Gers & Camp Life
No Prep Plans Mongol Empire: Homes, Gers (Yurts) & Camp Life
Explore Mongol daily life through the ingenious design of the ger (yurt)! Students investigate how gers were built, organized, kept comfortable in the harsh steppe climate, and packed for life on the move before applying their research to a Mongol Ger Fold-Out project.
Designed for Grades 6–8, this no-prep lesson combines history, research, design thinking, collaboration, and creative application in 1–2 class periods of 45–60 minutes.
What's Included
- Teacher directions
- Lesson overview + mini research questions
- 5-step Mongol Ger Fold-Out group activity
- 3 student research, planning & analysis pages
- Color + black-and-white student versions
- Research resources
Students Will Explore
Students investigate the relationship between environment and design, including how the ger's round shape, felt covering, collapsible structure, smoke opening, and portable construction helped Mongol families cope with strong winds, freezing winters, hot summers, and frequent movement.
They also examine life inside the ger, considering the central hearth, sleeping and living areas, place of honor, storage, and designated spaces for belongings. Students ultimately evaluate why such a seemingly simple structure was actually a highly specialized home for nomadic life.
