No Prep Plans | People Who Shaped America: Virginia | Arthur Ashe
No Prep Plans | People Who Shaped America: Virginia | Arthur Ashe Comic Strip Biography | Grades 4–8
Bring Virginia history, sports history, civil rights, and biography together with this Arthur Ashe Comic Strip Biography Research + Group Project! Students investigate the life of Virginia-born tennis champion and humanitarian Arthur Ashe before transforming their research into an original comic strip that tells the story of his achievements, challenges, courage, and lasting impact.
Students explore Ashe’s childhood in segregated Richmond, his rise to the highest levels of professional tennis, and the racial barriers he broke along the way. They also examine how Ashe used his fame beyond the tennis court—speaking against injustice, challenging apartheid, supporting education and health causes, and educating the public about HIV.
The final project asks students to turn history into visual storytelling by creating a Comic Strip Biography using illustrations, captions, speech or thought bubbles, and historically accurate details.
Designed for Grades 4–8, this no-prep lesson works well for Virginia history, U.S. history, Black History Month, civil rights studies, sports history, biography units, enrichment, or project-based learning.
