No Prep Plans: Korean Social Classes in Joseon Research + Group Project

No Prep Plans: Korean Social Classes in Joseon
Research + Group Project (Create a Social Hierarchy Pyramid Chart)
Grades 6–10

Help students investigate one of the most structured social systems in East Asian history with this engaging research and group project focused on the social hierarchy of Joseon Korea.

This resource is part of the larger Ancient Korea: Kingdoms & Dynasties series, designed to help students explore the governments, belief systems, daily life, traditions, and social structures that shaped Korean civilization through collaborative, student-centered learning experiences.

In this activity, students research the four major social classes of Joseon Korea — yangban, jungin, sangmin, and cheonmin — and examine how birth, occupation, education, clothing, and laws shaped people’s lives for over 500 years. Working in groups, students create a detailed Social Hierarchy Pyramid Chart explaining how the system worked and how the Gabo Reforms of 1894 officially ended the legal class structure.

Students also explore the long-term effects of hierarchy, social mobility, and how traces of the old system can still be seen in modern Korean society today.
