Food, Culture & Society | The Science of Taste | Brain and Senses Explainer
Food, Culture & Society | The Science of Taste | Brain and Senses Explainer
Grades 6–10
Turn something students experience every day—eating food—into an engaging investigation of the science happening inside their bodies!
In this no-prep Food, Culture & Society lesson, students explore how taste, smell, the brain, and other senses work together to create flavor. They discover that taste buds detect only a limited number of basic taste qualities, while the fuller experience of flavor depends heavily on smell and the brain’s ability to combine multiple types of sensory information.
Students then become science communicators, using their research to plan and create a Brain and Senses Explainer that clearly communicates the science behind taste and flavor.
Students Will Explore
- The five basic taste qualities: sweet, salty, sour, bitter, and umami
- How taste buds contribute to the eating experience
- The important role of smell in flavor
- How taste and smell signals reach and are processed by the brain
