No Prep Plans | People Who Shaped America: Virginia | Ella Fitzgerald State Hero Poster | Grades 4–8

Bring Virginia history, music, and biography together with this Ella Fitzgerald State Hero Poster Research + Group Project! Students investigate the remarkable life of the Virginia-born singer known as the “First Lady of Song” before using their research to design a State Hero Poster celebrating her life, music, and legacy.
Students explore Fitzgerald’s difficult childhood, the amateur singing contest that helped launch her career, her extraordinary voice, and her mastery of scat singing. They also examine her rise to worldwide fame, her accomplishments as a Black woman in 20th-century America, and the lasting impact of her artistry on jazz and popular music.

Designed for Grades 4–8, this no-prep lesson works well for Virginia history, American history, Black History Month, Women’s History Month, music history, biography studies, enrichment, or project-based learning.
