Quirky History: The Presidential Turkey PardonWho Pardoned the First Turkey? Investigation | Inspired by The West Wing | Grades 6–10
Everyone assumes they know who pardoned the first turkey — but the real history is a lot messier than the popular story.
In this Quirky History investigation, students dig into the surprisingly disputed origins of one of the White House’s most recognizable traditions: the presidential turkey pardon. Rather than simply searching for one “correct” president, students compare competing accounts, examine evidence from different presidential administrations, and investigate when the modern tradition actually became established.
Along the way, students discover why words such as spared, presented, pardoned, and tradition matter when historians try to determine who was really “first.”
