No Prep Plans | Byzantine Empire Geography: Mediterranean Trade Network Map | Grades 6–10

Explore how geography helped turn the Byzantine Empire into a major center of Mediterranean trade with this no-prep geography and mapping project for Grades 6–10. Students investigate specific goods moving between Europe, Asia, and Africa, trace the routes those goods traveled, and analyze the geographic points the Byzantine Empire needed to control to protect its commercial network.
In the culminating Mediterranean Trade Network Map, students become trade-route cartographers and document specific Byzantine trade routes, the goods they carried, their origins and destinations, and the important geographic features encountered along the way.
