No Prep Plans: Hwarang Warriors (Hwarang Code of Honor Handbook) Grades 6–10
No Prep Plans: Hwarang Warriors
Research + Group Project (Hwarang Code of Honor Handbook)
Grades 6–10
Introduce students to one of the most fascinating warrior traditions in Korean history with this engaging research and group project focused on the legendary Hwarang Warriors of Silla.
This resource is part of the larger Ancient Korea: Kingdoms & Dynasties series, designed to help students explore the people, beliefs, military traditions, cultural achievements, and historical legacies that shaped early Korea through collaborative, student-centered learning activities.
In this activity, students investigate the elite Hwarang warrior society — young nobles trained in martial arts, archery, poetry, music, leadership, and Buddhism. Working in groups, students create a detailed Hwarang Code of Honor Handbook designed to teach a “new recruit” about the Hwarang way of life, training, beliefs, and historical importance.
Students also examine the famous Five-Point Code of Wongwang, the role of the Hwarang in Silla’s unification of Korea, and the modern legacy of Hwa Rang Do martial arts.
