Heteronyms Worksheets | Multiple Meaning Words, Pronunciation & Context |

Heteronyms Worksheets | Multiple Meaning Words, Pronunciation & Context | Grades 5–8

Same spelling. Different sound. Different meaning!
Give students an engaging way to explore heteronyms—words that are spelled exactly the same but have different pronunciations and meanings.
This no-prep vocabulary challenge moves beyond simply recognizing multiple-meaning words. Students must determine two meanings for each heteronym and then demonstrate their understanding by writing an original sentence using each meaning correctly.

With two levels of difficulty, students progress from familiar heteronyms to more challenging words in which a change in syllable stress can also change the word's meaning and part of speech.

TWO LEVELS OF CHALLENGE
Level 1 — Familiar Heteronyms
Students work with more recognizable words such as tear, bass, and wind. These provide an accessible introduction to how identical spellings can represent completely different pronunciations and meanings.
Level 2 — Advanced Heteronyms
Students tackle more challenging vocabulary such as conduct, contract, convert, and project. Many of these words require students to recognize changes in syllable stress, meaning, and grammatical function.
