No Prep Plans: Spanish Conquest & Its Aftermath

No Prep Plans: Spanish Conquest & Its Aftermath
Research + Group Project (Spanish Conquest Investigation)
Grades 6-8

The arrival of the Spanish in the Americas after 1492 transformed world history. Within a few generations, Indigenous societies experienced dramatic population declines caused by disease, warfare, forced labor systems, and social disruption. At the same time, the Columbian Exchange reshaped agriculture, trade, economies, and cultures across the globe. In this inquiry-based research and group project, students investigate one aspect of the Spanish conquest and analyze its lasting consequences.

Part of the Ancient Mesoamerica Series, this lesson encourages students to examine the fall of major Indigenous empires, the spread of smallpox and other diseases, the encomienda labor system, silver mining at Potosí, and the global impact of the Columbian Exchange. Students gather evidence, organize historical information, analyze causes and consequences, and develop evidence-based arguments about which factor had the greatest impact on Indigenous societies and the wider world.
