Ancient World Turning Points | The Code of Hammurabi | Law and Justice Analysis

Ancient World Turning Points | The Code of Hammurabi | Law and Justice Analysis | Grades 6–10

Were Hammurabi's laws fair, and how did they change the way ancient civilizations approached justice?

In this no-prep Ancient World Turning Points lesson, students investigate one of history's most influential early written legal codes: the Code of Hammurabi.
Through historical research, critical thinking, evidence-based analysis, and collaborative discussion, students explore how Babylonian laws regulated society, established consequences for wrongdoing, and reflected ancient ideas about justice, power, and social hierarchy.

Students work in groups to complete a Law and Justice Analysis, examining specific laws, evaluating their fairness, and explaining how written legal codes represented an important turning point in the development of civilization.
