Refugee: Three Stories, One NovelThree Families Under Pressure | Family Response

Refugee: Three Stories, One NovelThree Families Under Pressure | Family Response Comparison

Help students look beyond the dangers and journeys in Refugee by Alan Gratz to examine what happens inside a family when everyone is under extreme pressure.
In this engaging no-prep novel study lesson, students compare the families of Josef, Isabel, and Mahmoud, investigating how each family communicates, makes decisions, handles conflict, adapts to changing circumstances, and stays together—or nearly breaks apart—during crisis.

Students discover that resilience isn't simply about one person being brave. Each family develops its own way of surviving: leadership changes, responsibilities shift, disagreements emerge, and family members must learn how to support one another when everything familiar has been stripped away.
Designed for Grades 5–8 and 1–2 class periods of 45–60 minutes, this lesson combines literary analysis, character study, evidence-based thinking, collaboration, and meaningful real-world connections.
