No Prep Plans: The Creation of Hangul
Research + Group Project (Why Hangul Changed Korea: Public Awareness Campaign) Grades 6–10
Help students explore one of the most important inventions in Korean history with this engaging research and group project focused on the creation of Hangul, Korea’s revolutionary writing system.
This resource is part of the larger Ancient Korea: Kingdoms & Dynasties series, designed to help students investigate the leaders, ideas, inventions, cultural achievements, and historical turning points that shaped Korean civilization through collaborative, student-centered learning experiences.
In this activity, students investigate how King Sejong the Great and the scholars of the Hall of Worthies created Hangul in the 1400s to make reading and writing accessible to ordinary people. Working in groups, students design a Public Awareness Campaign explaining why Hangul transformed Korean society and why it is still celebrated today through Hangul Day.
Students also explore the resistance from elite yangban nobles, the scientific design of Hangul letters, literacy in Joseon Korea, and modern global admiration for the Korean writing system.
