No Prep Plans: Ancient Korea Korean Scholar-Officials (Yangban)

No Prep Plans: Ancient Korea Wars, Politics & Turning Points
Korean Scholar-Officials (Yangban)
Research + Group Project (Government Training Manual) Grades 6–10

This lesson is part of the Ancient Korea Wars, Politics & Turning Points series, designed to help students explore major conflicts, political systems, social structures, leadership traditions, and defining moments that shaped Korean history.

Help students investigate the powerful scholar-official class that governed Korea for over 500 years with this engaging, inquiry-based research and group project! In this lesson, students explore the lives of the yangban — elite Joseon scholar-officials who earned government positions through the famously difficult gwageo civil-service exams.

Students research the structure of Joseon government, Confucian education, ancestor rituals, daily yangban life, and the long-lasting influence of Korea’s examination culture. Working collaboratively, students create a detailed “Government Training Manual” designed to teach future scholar-officials how to succeed in Joseon Korea.

Perfect for world history, Ancient Korea units, East Asian studies, middle school humanities, government/history integration, or engaging emergency sub plans.
