No Prep Plans: Enzymes & Digestion — Enzyme Investigation Report | Year 9/US 8th
No Prep Plans: Enzymes & Digestion — Enzyme Investigation Report | Year 9 Biology / US Grade 8
Bring enzymes and digestion to life with this hands-on Enzyme Investigation Report lesson! Designed for Year 9 Biology / US Grade 8, students explore how enzymes work, investigate factors that affect enzyme activity, and apply their understanding by planning, conducting, recording, graphing, and evaluating their own enzyme investigation.
Designed for 1–2 class periods (45–60 minutes each), this no-prep/low-prep resource combines biology, scientific inquiry, experimental design, data analysis, graphing, and collaborative learning. Students move beyond simply learning enzyme vocabulary to investigate how temperature, pH, or substrate concentration can affect enzyme activity.
Students Will:
- Explain how enzymes, substrates, active sites, and products interact
- Use the enzyme-substrate model to explain enzyme action
- Identify the roles of amylase, protease, and lipase in digestion
- Explain how temperature, pH, and substrate concentration affect enzyme activity
- Understand optimum conditions and denaturation
- Develop an aim and evidence-based hypothesis
- Identify independent, dependent, and control variables
- Plan and safely conduct an enzyme investigation
- Record observations and quantitative results
- Construct and interpret a scientific graph
- Identify patterns and determine optimum conditions from experimental data
- Evaluate experimental error and suggest improvements
- Apply enzyme knowledge to biological washing powders and real-world uses
What's Included:
- Teacher Directions
- Overview + Mini Research Questions
- 5-Step Group Activity
- 4 Student Research, Planning, Lab & Analysis Pages
- Black-and-White Student Versions
- 9-Activity Early Finisher Choice Board
- Black-and-White Early Finisher Version
Great For:
- Year 9 Biology / US Grade 8
- Cambridge Lower Secondary Science classrooms
