No Prep Plans: Mesoamerican Ballgame-Research+Project (Ballgame Investigation)
No Prep Plans: Mesoamerican Ballgame
Research + Group Project (Ballgame Investigation)
Grades 6-8
The Mesoamerican ballgame was far more than a sport. Played for more than 3,000 years across civilizations including the Olmec, Maya, Zapotec, Toltec, and Aztec, it combined athletic competition, advanced rubber technology, religious symbolism, political power, and cultural tradition. In this inquiry-based research and group project, students investigate one of the world's oldest team sports and explore what it reveals about Mesoamerican civilization.
Part of the Ancient Mesoamerican Series, this lesson challenges students to examine the rules of the game, the construction of massive ballcourts, the development of ancient rubber technology, the religious meanings associated with the sport, and the evidence surrounding human sacrifice. Students gather evidence, create an investigation profile, analyze historical sources, and develop evidence-based arguments about the significance of the ballgame in Mesoamerican society.
