PSA: Oddball Presidents – Did They Fail America or Did America Fail Them?

Following the presidency of Andrew Jackson, the American presidency experienced a drought. Eight men served as president between the years 1837 and 1861. Each man had been successful in his own right prior to the presidency. They had been military generals, governors, ambassadors, representatives, and senators. They had skills that the country felt could heal the nation of its problems. In fact, each made many positive contributions to the nation as presidents. However, none would be remembered for their accomplishments. Each man soon became disliked by the public and politicians alike. In spite of high expectations, each was popularly viewed as a failure in his own time and left the presidency in a weaker state than how he found it. Why did America experience a string of eight failed presidents? This Primary Source Analysis examines historic documents that bring to light the truth behind eight men who failed to lead the country to healing and prosperity. Why did our country experience such a long period of failed presidents known as the Oddball Presidents? Did They Fail America or Did America Fail Them? Examine the evidence and you decide!
