Civil Service Exams in Joseon
Research + Group Project (Exam Survival Guide)
Grades 6–10

Take students inside one of the world’s most demanding testing systems with this engaging Ancient Korea research and group project! In this lesson, students investigate the famous gwageo civil service exams of the Joseon Dynasty — the intense Confucian testing system that determined who could become government officials for over 500 years.

Students work collaboratively to create an “Exam Survival Guide” explaining what candidates studied, how the exams worked, what life inside the exam tents was like, and why the gwageo shaped Korean society for centuries.

This lesson is part of the Ancient Korea: Government, Trade & Society series — a collection of engaging research and group projects designed to help students explore the political systems, economies, diplomacy, social structures, and historical developments of Ancient Korea.
