Quirky History: Lincoln’s Last-Minute PardonThe Lincoln Pardon Mystery|West Wing

Quirky History: Lincoln’s Last-Minute PardonThe Lincoln Pardon Mystery | Inspired by The West Wing | Grades 6–10

More than once, a telegram from President Lincoln arrived just in time to save a soldier’s life.

In this Quirky History investigation, students explore a lesser-known side of Abraham Lincoln’s presidency: his willingness to personally review the cases of Union soldiers facing severe military punishment and grant pardons or reprieves. Students investigate a specific documented case, reconstruct the race from sentencing to presidential intervention, and analyze what Lincoln’s decision reveals about military justice, mercy, and presidential power during the Civil War.
Designed for 1–2 class periods, this No Prep Plan moves students from historical research to evidence analysis and culminates in their own Lincoln Pardon Mystery investigation.
