No Prep Plans | People Who Shaped America: Virginia | Matthew Fontaine Maury Documentary Storyboard | Grades 4–8
Bring Virginia history, science, and geography together with this Matthew Fontaine Maury Documentary Storyboard Research + Group Project! Students investigate the life and work of the Virginia scientist known as the “Pathfinder of the Seas” before transforming their research into a planned documentary storyboard.
Students explore how Maury collected information from ships’ logbooks, analyzed observations of winds, currents, and weather, and used that data to create charts that helped sailors find faster and safer routes across the oceans. They also examine his role in the development of oceanography, his study of the ocean floor, and the lasting importance of using data to understand the world’s oceans.
