No Prep Plans: Infectious Diseases — Disease Prevention Campaign | Year 9 Bio
No Prep Plans: Infectious Diseases — Disease Prevention Campaign | Year 9 Biology | Grades 6–8
Bring infectious diseases, pathogens, transmission, and disease prevention together in an engaging real-world project! In this No Prep Plans Year 9 Biology lesson, students investigate how infectious diseases spread, how the body responds to pathogens, and how different prevention strategies can interrupt transmission.
Students take on the role of a public-health communications team and research a real infectious disease such as measles, influenza, malaria, tuberculosis, or COVID-19. Using evidence from their research, teams develop a Disease Prevention Campaign aimed at teenagers or their local community. The emphasis is on creating health messages that are scientifically accurate, evidence-based, respectful, and useful rather than preachy or fear-based.
Students also explore important modern issues in disease prevention, including vaccination, antibiotic resistance, and mRNA vaccine technology, giving them opportunities to apply their biology knowledge to genuine public-health challenges.
Students Will:
- Distinguish between bacteria, viruses, fungi, and protists
- Explain common routes of disease transmission
- Connect transmission routes to appropriate prevention strategies
- Explain how phagocytes, lymphocytes, and antibodies help defend the body
- Research a real infectious disease using reliable evidence
- Compare the roles of hygiene, clean water, vaccination, antibiotics, and vector control
- Explain why antibiotics work against bacteria but not viruses
- Investigate how antibiotic resistance develops
- Explore how mRNA vaccines prepare the immune system
- Design an evidence-based Disease Prevention Campaign
- Communicate scientific information effectively to a specific audience
What's Included:
- Teacher Directions
- Infectious Diseases Overview + Mini Research Questions
- 5-Step Collaborative Group Activity
- 3 Student Research, Planning & Deeper-Thinking Pages
- Disease Prevention Campaign Planning Materials
- Color + Black-and-White Student Versions
- Early Finisher Choice Board with 9 Extension Activities
Skills Practiced:
- Scientific research
