The Giver: Assignments — Who Chooses Your Future?Career Assignment Investigation
The Giver: Assignments — Who Chooses Your Future? Career Assignment Investigation | Community, Control & Dystopian Society | Grades 6–10
What if someone else chose your career—and that decision shaped the rest of your life?
This no-prep literature analysis lesson challenges students to investigate the Assignment system in Lois Lowry’s The Giver and wrestle with one of the novel’s central tensions: Is a secure, carefully planned future worth giving up the freedom to choose it for yourself?
Brief Overview
Students investigate how the community determines each person's Assignment, including the role of the Committee of Elders and its years of observation. They consider how a system designed to match individuals with appropriate roles might benefit both the individual and the community while also limiting personal freedom and choice.
Students then move beyond basic research to weigh the tradeoffs of the Assignment system, examine who benefits, consider what happens when the system works—or gets it wrong—and analyze the relationship between security, freedom, choice, and control.
The lesson culminates in a collaborative Career Assignment Investigation in which students develop evidence-based entries examining the system’s benefits and costs, compare it with real-world career choice, and reach their own judgment about whether the benefits outweigh the costs.
