Five Themes of Geography: Human-Interaction Build a Sustainable Community
Five Themes of Geography: Human-Environment InteractionBuild a Sustainable Community — Geography Design Challenge
Bring the entire Human-Environment Interaction unit together with this culminating, no-prep Geography Design Challenge for Grades 6–8!
Students become geographic designers and create their own original sustainable community from the ground up. They apply what they have learned about adaptation, modification, dependence, water and settlement, agriculture, urban change, natural-resource decisions, and sustainability to make realistic choices about their community’s environment, resources, and design.
Students must also confront the reality that sustainable design involves trade-offs. They research real-world strategies, plan how residents will meet their needs, incorporate sustainability features, consider environmental consequences, and defend their final choices using concepts from throughout the unit.
