No Prep Plans: Human Gas Exchange — Lung Function Investigation | Year 9 Biology

No Prep Plans: Human Gas Exchange — Lung Function Investigation | Year 9 Biology / US Grade 8

Bring human gas exchange and lung function to life with a hands-on investigation that moves students beyond simply labeling the respiratory system! In this No Prep Plans Year 9 Biology lesson, students explore how the lungs are adapted for efficient gas exchange, investigate lung function, analyze experimental data, and connect their findings back to the structure and function of the alveoli.

Students work as a sports-science research team to safely conduct a Lung Capacity Experiment using a balloon or water-displacement spirometer, measure breathing rate before and after exercise, and compare results. Students then use their evidence to explain how alveolar structure supports efficient gas exchange and how exercise and lung damage can affect respiratory function.

Designed for 1–2 class periods of 45–60 minutes, this resource combines biology content, hands-on investigation, data analysis, scientific reasoning, and collaborative learning in one ready-to-use lesson.

Students Will:
- Explain human gas exchange and the role of the alveoli
- Trace the movement of oxygen and carbon dioxide through the respiratory system
- Explain how alveoli are adapted for efficient diffusion
- Investigate lung capacity and breathing rate
- Plan a fair investigation and identify key variables
- Collect, graph, and analyze experimental data
- Connect exercise and increased oxygen demand to changes in breathing
- Explore how smoking, emphysema, and COPD affect gas exchange
- Evaluate experimental evidence and suggest improvements
- Apply understanding to new and real-world situations
