Contronyms Worksheets | Janus Words Vocabulary & Context Challenge | Grades 5–8
Contronyms Worksheets | Janus Words Vocabulary & Context Challenge | Grades 5–8
Contronyms, sometimes called Janus words, are words that can have two opposing meanings depending on how they are used. This engaging vocabulary challenge asks students to investigate these unusual words, determine their two opposite meanings, and demonstrate their understanding through context.
Rather than giving students the meanings, this activity puts the thinking in their hands. Students may need to use prior knowledge, dictionaries, or other trusted resources to uncover both sides of each word.
TWO LEVELS OF CHALLENGE
Level 1 — More Accessible
Students investigate more familiar contronyms and discover how everyday words can take on surprisingly opposite meanings.
Level 2 — More Challenging
Students tackle less familiar and more complex Janus words, requiring deeper vocabulary investigation and careful attention to meaning.
After identifying the two meanings, students complete a “Prove It!” challenge by choosing a contronym and writing two original sentences that demonstrate its opposite uses.
