Ancient Mesoamerica: Geography--Geography and the Rise of Civilizations
No Prep Plans: Ancient Mesoamerica: Geography Geography and the Rise of Civilizations | Civilization Location Challenge Grades 6–8
Bring together everything your students have learned about Ancient Mesoamerica in this engaging culminating geography challenge! Instead of simply memorizing facts, students become historical geographers as they analyze landscapes, evaluate resources, solve geographic challenges, and defend the best location for a brand-new civilization.
Students investigate the geographic factors that influenced where the Olmec, Maya, Zapotec, Teotihuacan, and Aztec civilizations developed before applying those same principles to a Civilization Location Challenge. Using a detailed mystery map, students select the ideal settlement site, justify their decisions with historical evidence, defend their choices against competing locations, and explain how their civilization would survive natural disasters.
Designed as the capstone lesson in the Ancient Mesoamerica: Geography series, this project encourages higher-order thinking by asking students to apply, analyze, evaluate, and defend their understanding of geography rather than simply recall information.
