No Prep Plans: Cell Division & Growth — Mitosis Visual Simulation
No Prep Plans: Cell Division & Growth — Mitosis Visual Simulation | Year 9 Biology / US Grade 8
Bring cell division to life with this hands-on Mitosis Visual Simulation lesson! Designed for Year 9 Biology / US Grade 8, students investigate how cells divide, track chromosome movement through mitosis, and apply their understanding by designing a visual model using simple classroom materials.
Designed for 1–2 class periods (45–60 minutes each), this no-prep/low-prep resource combines research, scientific modeling, collaboration, and higher-level thinking. Students move beyond simply memorizing the stages of mitosis to understand what happens inside a dividing cell, why the process matters, and what can happen when cell division goes wrong.
Students Will:
- Explain how mitosis supports growth, repair, and cell replacement
- Identify and describe prophase, metaphase, anaphase, telophase, and cytokinesis
- Track chromosome movement throughout cell division
- Model chromosomes, spindle fibers, and other important cell structures
- Plan and create an accurate visual simulation of mitosis
- Communicate scientific understanding through labeled models and explanations
- Explore chromosome-separation errors and their possible effects
- Compare normal and uncontrolled cell division
- Connect mitosis to growth, tissue repair, and cancer
- Apply their understanding through higher-level analysis and extension activities
What's Included:
- Teacher Directions
- Overview + Mini Research Questions
- 5-Step Group Activity
- 3 Student Activity & Planning Pages
- Black-and-White Student Versions
- 9-Activity Early Finisher Choice Board
Great For:
- Year 9 Biology / US Grade 8
- Cambridge Lower Secondary Science classrooms
- Cell Division & Growth Units
- Mitosis Lessons
- Biology Review
- Scientific Modeling
- Collaborative Learning
- STEM Activities
- Sub Plans
- Independent or Small-Group Work
