The Giver: The Ceremony of Twelve — Ceremony & Social Control Analysis
The Giver: The Ceremony of Twelve — Ceremony & Social Control Analysis
Community, Control & Dystopian Society | Grades 6–10
Help students look beyond the Ceremony of Twelve as simply an important event in The Giver and examine how public ceremonies can reinforce community values, shape individual choices, and function as tools of social control.
This no-prep literature analysis lesson moves students from understanding the ceremony to analyzing power, choice, conformity, and control before creating a collaborative Ceremony & Social Control Analysis.
Brief Overview
Students investigate the Ceremony of Twelve, where twelve-year-olds publicly receive the Assignments that will shape their adult lives. They examine how the ceremony fits into the community's larger system of age-based rituals and consider why major life transitions are controlled by the community rather than left to individuals or families. 02-Ceremony-of-Twelve
Students then dig beneath the surface, considering how the ceremony can function as both a celebration and a form of social control. They analyze who has the power to make important decisions, what the ceremony accomplishes for the community, and how it affects individual freedom and choice.
The lesson culminates in a collaborative analysis featuring at least four ceremony-based entries and a comparison with a real-world rite of passage.
