Quirky History: The Birth of Chess | Chaturanga Origins Investigation |West Wing
Quirky History: The Birth of ChessChaturanga Origins Investigation | Inspired by The West Wing | Grades 6–10
According to legend, the inventor of chess once asked for a reward so simple-sounding that it became mathematically impossible to pay. But where did chess actually come from—and how did this remarkable mathematical story become connected to it?
In this No Prep Quirky History investigation, students travel back to 6th-century India to explore the origins of chaturanga, widely considered an ancestor of modern chess. They trace how the game spread through Persia and the Islamic world before reaching Europe and evolving into the chess we recognize today.
Then the investigation takes a mathematical turn! Students examine the famous wheat-and-chessboard legend, explore what happens when the number of grains doubles across 64 squares, and distinguish between the game's documented history and the stories that developed around its origins.
