No Prep Plans: Ancient Korea--Rise of the Joseon Dynasty

No Prep Plans: Ancient Korea Wars, Politics & Turning Points
Rise of the Joseon Dynasty
Research + Group Project (Dynasty Transition Timeline)
Grades 6–10

This lesson is part of the Ancient Korea Wars, Politics & Turning Points series, designed to help students explore major conflicts, political struggles, invasions, leadership decisions, and defining moments that shaped Korean history.

Help students investigate one of the most important turning points in Korean history with this engaging, inquiry-based research and group project! In this lesson, students explore the fall of the Goryeo Dynasty and the rise of the Joseon Dynasty in 1392, examining how General Yi Seong-gye transformed Korea and founded one of the longest-lasting dynasties in world history.

Students analyze the Wihwa Island turnaround, the move of the capital to Hanyang (modern Seoul), the rise of Neo-Confucianism, the creation of the yangban government system, and the long-lasting cultural legacy of Joseon Korea. Working collaboratively, students create a “Dynasty Transition Timeline” connecting the major events, reforms, and decisions that shaped early Joseon society.

Perfect for world history, Ancient Korea units, Asian studies, middle school humanities, or engaging emergency sub plans.
