No Prep Plans: Maya Civilization-(City-State Investigation)

No Prep Plans: Maya Civilization
Research + Group Project (City-State Investigation)
Grades 6-8

Part of the Ancient Mesoamerica Series, this engaging research and group project invites students to investigate one of the most remarkable civilizations in world history. Students explore the Maya civilization through the lens of a single city-state, examining how independent Maya centers such as Tikal, Palenque, Copán, Chichén Itzá, Uxmal, Caracol, and El Mirador became powerful hubs of science, mathematics, architecture, writing, and trade.

Students investigate famous rulers, towering pyramids, astronomical discoveries, hieroglyphic writing, and the Maya concept of zero while analyzing what made individual city-states successful. Through research, evidence collection, mapping, and historical analysis, students develop a deeper understanding of both the achievements of the ancient Maya and the living Maya communities that continue to thrive today.
