Number the Stars: What Does Number the Stars Ultimately Say?

Number the Stars: What Does Number the Stars Ultimately Say?Central Message Museum | Grades 5–8

Bring the entire Number the Stars novel study together with this culminating Central Message Museum project. Students synthesize the author’s craft elements and major themes they have studied to construct an evidence-based argument about the novel’s overall central message.

Rather than examining one literary element in isolation, students connect point of view, the fairy tale motif, title symbolism, the Star of David necklace, darkness and light imagery, suspense, secrecy, courage, and friendship to determine how these elements work together to create a larger meaning. Students gather evidence from at least four different areas of study, consider an alternative interpretation, and transform their analysis into a collaborative Central Message Museum where each exhibit panel helps build and defend their argument.
