Ancient Mesoamerica: War, Power & Politics — Military Training |Warrior Handbook

Ancient Mesoamerica: War, Power & Politics — Military Training | Warrior Handbook | Grades 6–8

Bring Aztec military training, weapons, and battlefield tactics to life with this no-prep research and creative project from the Ancient Mesoamerica: War, Power & Politics series!

Military training was built into Aztec education. Commoner students trained at the telpochcalli, while noble students at the calmecac prepared for leadership and command. Young warriors could enter battle first as shield-bearers and gear-carriers, learning alongside experienced veterans before fighting themselves.
In this lesson, students investigate how warriors were trained and equipped before applying their research to create an official Warrior Handbook for a new recruit. Along the way, they examine weapons, armor, battlefield communication, tactics, and the importance of capturing enemies in Aztec warfare.
