No Prep Plans: Energy Dissipation – Energy Efficiency Investigation
No Prep Plans: Energy Dissipation – Energy Efficiency Investigation
Year 7 Physics | Cambridge Lower Secondary Science Aligned
Help students investigate one of the most important ideas in physics: energy can never be destroyed, but it can be dissipated into the surroundings. In this hands-on Energy Efficiency Investigation, students explore how thermal energy is transferred, why insulation matters, and how engineers design systems that reduce heat loss and improve energy efficiency.
Students research conduction, convection, and radiation before planning and conducting a fair scientific investigation. Using different insulation materials, they collect temperature data, analyze results, create graphs, and recommend the most effective insulator based on scientific evidence. The project connects classroom learning to real-world applications such as insulated homes, winter clothing, thermos flasks, lunchboxes, and camping equipment.
What's Included:
• Teacher Directions Page (Two 45–60 Minute Lessons)
• Student Research & Planning Page
• Student Data Collection & Results Page
• Student Energy Efficiency Report Page
• Color and Black & White Versions
Students Will Learn About:
• Energy Dissipation
• Thermal Energy Transfer
• Conduction
• Convection
• Radiation
• Insulation Materials
• Energy Efficiency
• Fair Testing and Experimental Design
• Real-World Engineering Applications
Skills Developed:
• Scientific Investigation
• Data Collection
• Graphing and Data Analysis
• Critical Thinking
• Problem Solving
