No Prep Plans: Circulatory System — Blood Flow Analysis | Year 9 Biology

No Prep Plans: Circulatory System — Blood Flow Analysis | Year 9 Biology / Grades 6–8

Bring the human circulatory system to life with a hands-on investigation that connects heart anatomy to real student data! In this No Prep Plans Year 9 Biology lesson, students explore how the heart, blood vessels, and double circulatory system work together to transport materials throughout the body.

Students take on the role of a cardiology research lab, safely measuring heart rate before and after exercise and tracking recovery. They then analyze their results and connect changes in heart rate to oxygen demand, blood flow, heart structure, and vessel function. Students also investigate what happens when normal circulation is disrupted and explore the real-world use of angioplasty and stents to restore blood flow through narrowed coronary arteries.

Designed for 1–2 class periods of 45–60 minutes, this resource combines biology content, scientific investigation, data analysis, graphing, and real-world application in one engaging lesson.

Students Will:
- Trace blood through the heart, lungs, and body
- Explain double circulation and one-way blood flow
- Compare the structure and function of arteries, veins, and capillaries
- Investigate how exercise affects heart rate and recovery
- Plan a fair investigation and identify variables
- Collect, graph, and analyze heart-rate data
- Connect increased activity to changes in blood flow
- Explore coronary artery disease, angioplasty, and stents
- Evaluate experimental evidence and suggest improvements
- Apply circulatory-system concepts to real-world situations
