No Prep Plans: Adaptations & Natural Selection | Year 9 Biology

No Prep Plans: Adaptations & Natural Selection | Survival Adaptations Showcase | Year 9 Biology
Help students understand adaptations and natural selection through research, analysis, and an engaging collaborative project!

In this No Prep Plans Year 9 Biology lesson, students investigate how structural, behavioural, and functional adaptations help organisms survive in different environments. They then become a junior evolutionary-biology research team, comparing three contrasting organisms and creating a Survival Adaptations Showcase that connects each adaptation to an environmental challenge and explains how natural selection can make helpful traits more common over generations.

Students also apply their understanding to classic and modern examples, including peppered moths, Darwin’s finches, and antibiotic-resistant bacteria.
Designed for 1–2 class periods of 45–60 minutes and ideal for Grades 6–8.

Students Will:
- Identify and classify different types of adaptations
- Connect adaptations to environmental challenges
- Explain the process of natural selection
- Analyze how helpful traits become more common over generations
- Apply natural selection to real-world examples
- Research and compare organisms from contrasting environments
- Create and present a Survival Adaptations Showcase
