Byzantine Daily Life & Culture: Clothing & Fashion Byzantine Fashion Collection
Byzantine Daily Life & Culture: Clothing & FashionByzantine Fashion Collection | Grades 6–8
Explore Byzantine daily life and culture through clothing and fashion with this no-prep research and project-based lesson. Students investigate how Byzantine clothing was much more than practical—it communicated wealth, social status, religious identity, and authority. They explore the differences between ordinary clothing and elaborate imperial dress, including materials such as wool, linen, and silk, as well as embroidery, precious decorations, and restricted colors.
Students then become fashion historians and create a Byzantine Fashion Collection, featuring garments associated with 2–3 different social positions. They research clothing worn by emperors, court officials, ordinary citizens, and clergy and explain what each garment's materials, colors, and design reveal about Byzantine society.
