Ancient Mesoamerica: War, Power & Politics — Warrior Societies | Warrior Shield
Ancient Mesoamerica: War, Power & Politics — Warrior Societies | Warrior Shield Project | Grades 6–8
Bring Aztec warrior societies to life with this hands-on, no-prep research and design project from the Ancient Mesoamerica: War, Power & Politics series!
In Aztec society, military achievement could transform a warrior’s social status. Students explore how eagle warriors and jaguar warriors earned recognition through battlefield captures and how hairstyles, clothing, insignia, feathers, and shields visually communicated achievement and rank. They also investigate the chimalli, including its materials, feather-mosaic decoration, geometric designs, and historical significance.
Students then apply their research to the Warrior Shield Project, designing a historically grounded chimalli shield and creating the rank card of the warrior who carries it. Every design choice has a purpose—the shield’s colors, patterns, symbols, and details should communicate the warrior’s society and achievements.
