No Prep Plans: Ancient Korea Construction of Hwaseong Fortress
No Prep Plans: Ancient Korea Wars, Politics & Turning Points
Construction of Hwaseong Fortress
Research + Group Project (Fortress Defense Blueprint). Grades 6–10
This lesson is part of the Ancient Korea Wars, Politics & Turning Points series, designed to help students explore major conflicts, political struggles, engineering achievements, leadership decisions, and defining moments that shaped Korean history.
Help students investigate one of Korea’s greatest engineering accomplishments with this engaging, inquiry-based research and group project! In this lesson, students explore how late-Joseon Korea constructed the massive Hwaseong Fortress in Suwon between 1794 and 1796 using innovative technology, careful planning, and advanced defensive design.
Students examine the vision of King Jeongjo, the engineering genius of Jeong Yak-yong (Dasan), the invention of the geojunggi crane, and the fortress’s advanced defensive features. Working collaboratively, students create a detailed “Fortress Defense Blueprint” showing how Hwaseong combined traditional Korean architecture with new engineering ideas from both Asia and Europe.
Perfect for world history, Ancient Korea units, Asian studies, STEM/history integration, middle school humanities, or engaging emergency sub plans.
