Designed for Grades 6–8, this lesson combines research, historical analysis, collaboration, and creative application in 1–2 class periods of 45–60 minutes.

Students Will Explore
Students discover why hunting was much more than a source of food for the Mongols. They examine the enormous organized nerge, where riders coordinated across great distances to drive animals into a tightening area, and analyze how teamwork, discipline, communication, and coordination mirrored skills needed in warfare.

Students also investigate falconry, including the training of eagles, falcons, and hawks, the relationship between hunter and bird, and the continuation of golden-eagle hunting traditions among some peoples of the region today.
Create a Royal Hunting Guide

Working collaboratively, students transform their research into an illustrated guide to Mongol hunting. Their finished project includes at least four sections explaining important aspects of hunting, along with descriptions, illustrations, and an “Eagle Hunters Today” feature connecting historical traditions with the present.
