No Prep Plans: Year 8 Physics – Pressure & Force | Pressure Investigation
Hands-On Cambridge Lower Secondary Science Companion
Year 8 / US Grade 7

Help students discover how force and contact area combine to create pressure through an engaging, hands-on physics investigation. In this practical lesson, students compare how identical forces acting over different contact areas produce different pressures, collect experimental data, calculate pressure, and apply their understanding to real-world engineering challenges.

Using modelling clay or wet sand, students investigate the relationship between force, area, and pressure, then analyse everyday examples including snowshoes, knife blades, tractor tyres, drawing pins, and camel's feet. The lesson concludes with an engineering design challenge that encourages students to apply scientific thinking to solve authentic problems.
