Refugee: Three Stories, One NovelThree Experiences of Loss | Turning Point
Refugee: Three Stories, One NovelThree Experiences of Loss | Turning Point Investigation
Loss is more than something that happens to a character—it can become the moment that changes everything that comes afterward.
In this engaging no-prep lesson for Refugee by Alan Gratz, students investigate the defining losses experienced by Josef, Isabel, and Mahmoud and trace how those moments affect their thoughts, behaviors, relationships, identities, and later choices. Rather than treating loss simply as a sad event, students examine it as a literary turning point that actively shapes who each character becomes.
Designed for Grades 5–8 and 1–2 class periods of 45–60 minutes, this lesson combines close reading, character analysis, textual evidence, cause and effect, comparison, reflection, and meaningful real-world connections.
