No Prep Plans: Ancient Korea-Korean Printing Technology & Metal Type

No Prep Plans: Ancient Korea Wars, Politics & Turning Points
Korean Printing Technology & Metal Type
Research + Group Project (Ancient Technology Showcase) Grades 6–10

This lesson is part of the Ancient Korea Wars, Politics & Turning Points series, designed to help students explore major conflicts, political struggles, inventions, leadership decisions, and defining moments that shaped Korean history.

Help students explore one of Korea’s greatest technological achievements with this engaging, inquiry-based research and group project! In this lesson, students investigate how Goryeo Korea invented movable metal type printing more than 200 years before Gutenberg and examine why this groundbreaking invention is still often overlooked in world history.

Students research the origins of Korean movable metal type, the famous Jikji printed in 1377, the printing workshops of Goryeo Korea, and the global significance of Korean printing technology. Working collaboratively, students create an “Ancient Technology Showcase” designed to teach others why Korea’s invention deserves a much larger place in world history.

Perfect for world history, Ancient Korea units, Asian studies, middle school humanities, STEM/history crossover lessons, or engaging emergency sub plans.
